What to Wear: A Simple Guide to Session Outfits
Neutral doesn't mean boring. Here's how to dress your family in a way that keeps the focus where it belongs — on the faces, not the clothes.
The Rule I Actually Give Clients
Start with one person — usually mom or whoever cares most — and build the rest of the family around her outfit. Pick two or three colours that complement each other without matching perfectly. Think earthy tones, muted greens, warm creams, dusty blues.
What to avoid: bright logos, busy patterns, anything that says "I wore this specifically for photos." Your session wardrobe should look like a coordinated version of what you'd wear on a good day.
Textures Help
Linen. Knit sweaters. Denim done right. Textural fabrics photograph beautifully and feel approachable on camera. A solid cream linen shirt does more work than a perfectly coordinated outfit from a department store.
A Note on White
White is lovely in the right light. White is tricky in direct sun. If white is part of your palette, we'll talk about how to use it well.
The Things Nobody Tells You
- Tuck in your shirt if it's long. Untucked tends to look shapeless on camera.
- Shoes matter more than people think. Bare feet on a hardwood floor, leather boots in a field, white sneakers for the kids — these choices add up.
- Your child's comfort is more important than their outfit. A kid who hates their shoes will make sure you know about it for the entire session.
- You're going to look beautiful. Not in a perfected way. In the true way. The way you actually look when you're happy.
That's the goal. Not perfect. True.
